Local jewelry artist Paula Godden is rooted in New Westminster, but her dreams and ideas make her a worldly wanderer. With a gypsy heart, a free spirit and a passion that can’t be rivaled – Paula is creating handcrafted pieces that will bring out the beauty within you
Paula is living her best life. Her decision to focus on her craft has given her the opportunity to arrive at a new starting point for the rest of her personal and creative journey. Her artistic pursuits have given her the drive and determination to overcome personal challenges in her own past. Paula has a story to tell. Her history, experiences and struggles are reflected in her line of jewellery. Each piece is an expression–an expression any woman can interpret to tell her own story.
Through her art, Paula has found the freedom to be herself. She has embraced her Gypsy heritage and is inspired by the spirit, beliefs and traditions of her culture.
It’s not just about looking good, it’s about feeling good about what you are wearing. Paula believes every woman should have access to beautiful, consciously made jewellery at affordable prices. The Pirate + The Gypsy jewellery is not simply something you wear, it’s a feeling. There is something so incredibly personal in choosing a piece that has been handcrafted. Paula brings soul to her work and her desire is for you to feel a connection to her creative process.
If you’ve seen our first two vlogs in this series with The Pirate + The Gypsy, you’ll already know why we love founder Paula Godden’s story and her mission to create gorgeous jewelry by hand from her studio in New Westminster, BC.
If you’re like us, you’ve got to be curious what’s behind that unique name… The Pirate + The Gypsy!
The brand shares the sentiment, “We are All Bohemian Beautiful.” The Pirate + The Gypsy is not just a reflection of Paula’s style, but it’s who she is. The name was born from her heritage, self-professed free spiritedness, love of beauty, nature, the ocean, and life. These things all drive the direction of Paula’s designs and business.
“I want to share the joy and the expression of bohemian beauty in my jewelry with others so that they may discover their own expression of that beauty each time they wear a piece of jewelry that I created, for I believe that in our hearts we are all bohemian beautiful.”
We are back in The Pirate + The Gypsy Studio! In our first video, creator Paula shared with us her brand story – including her ‘why’ – and how she was first inspired to create beautiful, consciously made jewelry at affordable prices.
Today we are getting a little bit more in depth with Paula about her creative process and how clients and women just like you can work with her one-on-one to bring your jewelry visions to life!
Paula shares, “Each piece starts with the spark of an idea in my minds eye or sketched out on to paper. I truly believe that in every stone there is a is a story, an energy, a feeling. This is why I hand pick all my stones. I find joy in the translation of that story, bringing to life the unique piece of jewelry it will become.”

While collaborating to create our "Initial Necklace" we had the pleasure of spending time with Paula of The Pirate & The Gypsy, and she is a treasure! We just couldn't keep her and her talents to ourselves.
Paula creates beautiful, consciously made, affordable jewelry in limited runs of ready to wear pieces, but also specializes in custom design. She has made many women's engagement ring dreams come to life, and also matched a lot of husband/wife ring fingers. And yes she also offers jewelry repairs for even your most precious pieces (like Samantha's family heirloom ring).
It's hard to imagine that The Pirate & The Gypsy was born out of personal need. Paula who is always perfectly adorned with her own custom designs, was for years not wearing any jewelry at all due to severe metal allergies. Tired of being caught in the constant struggle of searching for unique quality pieces that she was able to wear, and also fit her style and bank account she began designing pieces for herself and there-in a talent and genuine love for her craft was discovered.
This Mother's Day, we've teamed up with some awesome brands and featured some of our favorite products to bring you not only a Mother's Day gift guide, but best of all, an entire week of daily giveaways!
Starting today we'll be hosting a series of daily giveaways on our Instagram (@loftyliving) where you can enter to win all of these items for your mom (or yourself, we won't tell her!)
But, just in case you don't win, or you want one for yourself, we've included all the links to where you can shop these lovelies!
We collaborated to have these lovelies handmade locally by The Pirate & The Gypsy. Stay tuned for more on Paula's custom design work, and the unique ready to wear pieces she creates in limited runs, all the reasons we chose to work with her on this creation.
When it comes to daydreaming and thinking up creative ideas, most artists can say that deep down, that’s all they ever really want to do. Being an artist is often like being a pirate and a gypsy; searching for that golden idea while striving to keep it secret until it is time to unveil.
I caught up with Paula Godden owner and designer at The Pirate + The Gypsy and asked her to give us a few insights into her world of wonder.
Today we chatted with Paula from The Pirate + The Gypsy Designs to find out her story and what inspires her on the West Coast. Catch her this Mother’s Day weekend at the Queensborough Pop-Up Shop.
